Hayagreeva is a traditional Karnataka sweet dish, made during festivals or on special occasions.
Ingredients: (Measurement: 1cup - 180 ml)
- Split chickpeas / Chana Dal - 1 cup
- Water - 3.5 cups
- Poppy seeds / Gasagase / Khus khus - 2 tsp
- Jaggery (crushed) - 1 cup
- Coconut (Freshly grated) - 1/2 cup
- Dry coconut (grated) - 1/2 cup
- Ghee - 4 tbsp
- Cashews (split) - 15
- Raisins - 15

Preparation:
- Add washed chana dal to a pressure cooker and pour 2.5 cups of water to it. Pressure cook till 5 - 6 whistles.
- Add poppy seeds to a kadai. Roast till it turns slightly brown colour. Keep aside.
- Add 1 tbsp of ghee to a kadai and add split cashews, raisins. Roast till the cashews and raisins turn golden brown. Keep aside.
- Add jaggery to the same kadai and pour 1 cup of water. Cook till jaggery melts and starts boiling.
- Add cooked chana dal and stir well.
- Now add roasted poppy seeds and mix well. Cook on Low flame.
- Once the mixture starts boiling, add freshly grated coconut and dry coconut. Mix well.
- Add cardamom powder and roasted dryfruits. Mix all together. Cook on Low flame till the mixture thickens.
- Mash the mixture lightly. Now add 2 - 3 tbsp of ghee and keep stirring.
- Once the mixture thickens, transfer to a serving bowl.
- Hayagreeva is ready to be savoured. Enjoyy !!
