Ingredients:
- Bendekayi / Okra (chopped) - 15
- Coconut (freshly grated) - 1/2 cup
- Tamarind juice - 1/2 cup
- Green chillies - 5
- Coriander leaves - few
- Curry leaves - few
- Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
- Jaggery - 3 tsp
- Fried grams - 1 tbsp
- Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
- Sesame seeds / Til/ Ellu - 1 tsp
- Water - 2 cups
- Oil - 2 tbsp
- Hing / Asafoetida - 1-2 pinch
- Salt - to taste
Preparation:
- Add sesame seeds in a kadai, dry roast till it crackles.
- Add freshly grated coconut, roasted sesame seeds, fried grams, green chillies, coriander leaves, 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, turmeric powder and 1/2 cup water to a mixer jar. Grind it and make a thick paste.
- In a kadai, add oil and splutter 1/2 tsp mustard seeds. Add curry leaves, hing and saute.
- Add chopped Okra to the kadai along with 1/2 tsp salt. Saute for 4-5 minutes.
- Add tamarind juice, stir and allow it to cook for 3-5 minutes. This helps to remove sliminess.
- Add the ground paste and jaggery, mix well. Add 1 1/2 cup of water and required salt. Cook for 5 - 10 minutes till it becomes thick gravy consistency.
- Bendekayi gojju is ready to be served with Chapathi/ Akki (rice flour) rotti / Ragi rotti / Rice.
