Bendekayi Gojju | Okra Curry | Karnataka style

Bendekayi Gojju

Ingredients:
  • Bendekayi / Okra (chopped) - 15
  • Coconut (freshly grated) - 1/2 cup
  • Tamarind juice - 1/2 cup
  • Green chillies - 5
  • Coriander leaves - few
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Jaggery - 3 tsp
  • Fried grams - 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Sesame seeds / Til/ Ellu - 1 tsp
  • Water - 2 cups
  • Oil - 2 tbsp
  • Hing / Asafoetida - 1-2 pinch
  • Salt - to taste

Bendekayi Gojju

Preparation:

  1. Add sesame seeds in a kadai, dry roast till it crackles.
  2. Add freshly grated coconut, roasted sesame seeds, fried grams, green chillies, coriander leaves, 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, turmeric powder and 1/2 cup water to a mixer jar. Grind it and make a thick paste.
  3. In a kadai, add oil and splutter 1/2 tsp mustard seeds. Add curry leaves, hing and saute.
  4. Add chopped Okra to the kadai along with 1/2 tsp salt. Saute for 4-5 minutes.
  5. Add tamarind juice, stir and allow it to cook for 3-5 minutes. This helps to remove sliminess.
  6. Add the ground paste and jaggery, mix well. Add 1 1/2 cup of water and required salt. Cook for 5 - 10 minutes till it becomes thick gravy consistency.
  7. Bendekayi gojju is ready to be served with Chapathi/ Akki (rice flour) rotti / Ragi rotti / Rice.
