Gojjavalakki | Traditional South Karnataka recipe

Gojjavalakki

Ingredients:

  • Thick beaten rice / gatti avalakki / poha - 3 cups
  • Tamarind juice - 1 1/4 cup
  • Jaggery - 1/2 cup
  • Rasam powder - 4 tsp
  • Water - 1 1/2 cup
  • Oil - 3 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Channa dal - 1 tsp
  • Urad dal - 1 tsp
  • Peanuts - 3 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Coconut (freshly grated) - 1 cup 
  • Dry coconut (grated) - 3 tbsp
  • Sesame / til / ellu powder - 1 tbsp
  • Hing /asafoetida powder - 2 pinch 
  • Dry red chillies - 8 pieces
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Salt - as per taste

Gojjavalakki

Preparation:

1.  Add avalakki / poha in a mixer and use pulse button 2-3 times to make a coarse powder. Transfer it to a bowl and keep aside.

2.  In a kadai, add tamarind juice, water, rasam powder, jaggery and salt. Bring it to boil and allow to boil for 3-5 minutes.

3.  Add boiled tamarind mixture to avalakki powder, mix well and press it gently. Keep aside.

4.  Heat oil in a kadai. Add mustard seeds and wait till they splutter.

5.  Add channa dal, urad dal, peanuts and saute till golden brown.

6.  Now add hing, dry red chillies, curry leaves, turmeric powder and salt. saute all the ingredients.

7.  Crumble the soaked avalakki mixture and add to the same kadai.

8.  Add grated dry coconut, grated fresh coconut and sesame powder. Mix well.

9.  Allow Gojjavalakki to settle for 15 minutes before serving.

10. Delicious Gojjavalakki is ready to be served. You can have it with a bowl of curd.
